Eastbourne Beach Management Works

A beach nourishment contract at Eastbourne, Sussex involving the import of 195,000m³ of shingle, from an offshore licensed area, plus recycling 72,000m³ of existing shingle, over the complete 5.5 km Eastbourne frontage.

The contract was executed entirely by Boskalis Westminster on behalf of Pevensey Coastal Defence Ltd. The project presented significant challenges of both sourcing coarse material and pumping it ashore over long shallow approaches. Boskalis Westminster had access to several licensed winning areas and adopted an innovative approach by using a large dredger, operating at reduced capacity. The in-house project manager, from the adjacent Pevensey Bay contract, was engaged as a community liaison officer to benefit from his existing relationships and extensive local knowledge.
